About Bill Hoffman...
My name is Bill Hoffman, and, joining with you, I’d like to start something new. I’d like to be your next Representative in Congress from right here, our home district, the 7th.

Some of you have known me for a long time.

You know of my economics background. I'm an entrepreneur, having successfully produced motion pictures in California and in several parts of the world and that I have a proven track record of working with people of very diverse backgrounds.

You know that I support Labor … that I admire and am thankful of Labor’s past struggles … that I believe that some free trade agreements have destroyed US jobs and that we need to carefully write such agreements to take into account our own livelihood.

You know of my long history of opposing the draft, of opposing the second Iraq Invasion and subsequent war. I support our troops in all parts of the world in which they serve, and I want to see them home, safe and soon.

You know that I want to simplify the way income is taxed in the United States. I propose a three-tier approach, a progressive, not regressive taxing system.

You know of my involvement at Schmitz Park Elementary near our home in West Seattle, and how passionate my wife and I are about our fine, though often stressed public schools, and that we are very proud to be a part of that system and that both of our children are thriving there.

You know that I pledge that any proposed bill of which I am the primary sponsor will be written by me, your Congressman. No bill of mine will be written by anyone else, and certainly not by any lobbyist, corporation or political action committee.

You know that I have always supported equal rights, including a woman’s right to choose, and full, complete and equal marriage rights for LGBTs.

You know of my strong support of the public option and that I believe that affordable healthcare for all is a fundamental social responsibility.

You know of my environmental stands, that I’ve scuba dived off of every Puget Sound public beach in our district and hiked every major trail in all three of our state’s national parks.

You know that I have proposed some innovative solutions to a number of our most important environmental issues. Just one of these proposals to help slow the pace of global warming, is to create new federal tax incentives to award those of you who live close to work and to reward the companies for whom you work. Properly administered, such a program could significantly reduce traffic on a freeway system that wasn’t designed for commuting short distances and by cutting the total number of miles Americans drive each day, combined with new automotive technology (hybrid that is quickly replaced by electric)
we could significantly cut total CO2 emissions across America.

My family has been rooted in Seattle for five generations. When you talk about unemployment, the “Great Recession,” health care, growth, poverty, traffic, public transit, the viaduct, the 520, the South Park Bridge, pollution in Puget Sound or around “the mountain,” cleaning up “the river,” growing a more viable tree canopy for the city, homelessness, taxes, public school issues, a host of land use issues … well, I know what those issues mean to Seattleites and our Puget Sound area neighbors.

Truth be told, we’re a pragmatic bunch in the 7th, with strong opinions, though we tend to be polite about it, and I believe some of our present politicians have lost their pragmatism. Worse, we of the 7th don’t have a strong national voice to help get our local issues resolved.

Our district needs a progressive thinker who is willing to work in concert with local leaders and constituents, who is in touch with where the innovative members of the Democratic Party are headed and who is willing to provide a powerful, concise voice in helping to steer the ship.

I support President Obama’s courageous pursuit of vital national goals and his vision of a world at peace with itself.

I promise you I won’t be a sideshow event. I will not sit on the sidelines. The 7th is too important to the rest of the nation to be underrepresented.

We matter. Our collective voices should be heard loudly and clearly in Washington, DC.

In closing, remember, united we can make big and bold changes that can better the lives of our friends, neighbors and all the citizens of the 7th. We might even be able to provide a little national leadership on issues that are important to the entire nation.

Please stay in touch with us here at the Hoffman for Congress campaign and let us know what’s on your mind.

Sincerely,

Bill Hoffman
